An Experience of Burch Retropubic Colposuspension for Urinary Stress Incontinence

Abstract
Many operations have been devised in the surgical treatment of urinary stress incontinence, since the anterior colporrhaphy was reported by Kelly and Dumm in 1914.
Marshall-Marchetti suprapubic cystourethropexy, in which sutures are placed between paraurethral tissue and synchondrosis of the pubic bone, has been widely used for urinary stress incontinence and its results are superior to those achieved by other procedures.
However, in some cases the synchondrosis of the pubis is poorly developed, difficulties are encountered to pass the sutures through the synchondrosis. And the urethra is sometimes compressed against the pubis by Marshall-Marchetti operation and permanent retention can be resulted in.
In attempting to overcome some of these difficulties, Burch retropubic colposuspension, a modification of Marshall-Marchetti operation, was introduced in 1961.
We report an experience of Burch retropubic colposuspension underwent for urinary stress incontinence with brief review of literatures.
